Gravel Stabilisation Grid FAQ's
Yes. Nidagravel 129, 130 & 140 all have a membrane attached to the underside of the sheet. The membrane is thermally bonded to the honeycomb cells in the factory using a hot glue process and extends on two sides (1 long side and 1 short side) so that it forms an overlap. Adjoining sheets are then laid onto this overlap during installation to ensure continuity of the membrane.
Nidagravel prevents weed growth in four ways:
It is recommended that a 10mm gravel or chipping be used to fill the Nidagravel honeycomb sheets. 10mm is the average size of the decorative gravel with the actual gravel or chipping sizes being between 4mm and 12mm. This size of gravel settles into the honeycomb cells nicely without leaving voids and allows for a 10mm thick layer of gravel to cover the surface of the honeycomb sheets making them completely invisible.
Most types of 10mm decorative gravel or chipping are suitable for use with Nidagravel 129, 130 & 140. We have a specially selected range of Nidagravel Aggregates available in bulk bags for use with the Nidagravel sheets in a range of colours and textures including golden pea gravel, black basalt chippings, silver granite chippings, Cotswold chippings and spar multi.
No, Nidagravel is fully UV resistant. The Nidagravel sheets are also designed to be hidden under a thin layer of gravel and so are not directly exposed to sunlight when installed.
This depends on which Nidagravel product you are using. You will require the following amounts of gravel to fill your Nidagravel sheets:
When filling your Nidagravel honeycomb sheets you should over fill the honeycomb sheets by approx. 20mm. This allows for 10mm of settlement and compaction and leaves a 10mm layer of gravel to ensure the honeycomb sheets are hidden.
You can use Nidagravel 129, 130 & 140 for a residential driveway. We would recommend the following use of products for driveways:

Yes Nidagravel is completely SUDS compliant. Nidagravel surfaces are 100% permeable.
Yes, you can use Nidagravel on a sloping driveway. In fact, Nidagravel is perfect for sloping driveways and prevents gravel migration and loss of gravel. There is a recommended maximum limit to the gradient of a sloping driveway that Nidagravel panels will work effectively and that is 15% or 1 in 6.67. Detailed information about using Nidagravel on a gradient is available on our website, please see the relevant section.
No, you will not see the honeycomb sheets at all once installed and filled with gravel. Nidagravel is designed to be invisible, it is a hidden gravel stabilisation system and all you will see a lovely gravel surface finish, that is level and firm to drive and walk on.
Yes you can. Nidagravel is ideally suited for gravel patio, terraces and seating areas. The stable gravel surface provides a firm base for benches, tables and chairs.
Ideally yes. As gravel is a loose surface, it is a good idea to use some sort of edging to separate your gravel from your lawn or border. Where your Nidagravel surface finishes against a boundary wall, house wall, paved or hard surface, it is not necessary to use an edging in these places. Nidagravel works well with all types of edging including:
Whichever edging option you choose, it is a good idea to set the edgings 10 – 20mm higher than the finished gravel surface so that the gravel is nicely edged and retained.
Nidagravel is 100% permeable. All rainwater that falls on to the Nidagravel surface will immediately drain through the stabilised gravel surface and percolate (filter gradually through a porous surface) through the sub-base and sub-grade.
Yes you can. Nidagravel can be laid directly over concrete, tarmac and block paved driveways to instantly transform them into a crisp gravel driveway. The gravel will be completely stable and will remain permanently in place. Nidagravel honeycomb sheets can only be laid directly on to the existing driveway surface be it concrete, block paving or tarmac when:
It is also important to note that installing Nidagravel in this way will mean the driveway or gravel surface will not meet SUDS requirements as they have a monolithic type sub-base which will not drain freely to the sub-grade.
Nidagravel 129, 130 and 140 are all translucent white in colour. This is the colour of the new and recycled polypropylene used in manufacture. No colour dyes or pigments are used in the production of Nidagravel.
Nidagravel 129, 130 and 140 are all very easy to cut on site. Two methods are commonly used. Most landscaping and builder contractors opt to cut sheets using petrol saws or electric angle grinders. A diamond or masonry disc is used and cuts easily through the polypropolene honeycomb sheets. Alternative a handsaw can be used, which is equally quick to cut through the sheets. We recommend using a fine tooth saw with 9 or 10 TPI (teeth per inch) rather than a course saw blade, which can snag on the honeycomb cells. Both angle grinders and hand saws will easily cut straight lines and curves through the honeycomb sheets, so that Nidagravel can be laid in any shape or pattern, including acute angles.
Each Nidagravel product weighs slightly different due to its sheet size and thickness. The weights are as follows:
For more details please read through the product descriptions for each Nidagravel stabilisation product.
Yes you can. All Nidagravel sheets are lightweight and easy for 1 person to lift, move and install. Just be carefully on a windy day with Nidagravel 130 and 140 as each sheet is 2.4sqm in size or 2.4m long x 1.2m wide and they can be caught by the wind when moving them around, on windy days it's a lot easier for a 2 man team to install Nidagravel 130 and 140. Due to the smaller size of Nidagravel 129, wind is not a problem when moving them around and their lightweight compact size make them ideal for small to medium DIY projects.
No you don't. Standard tools are all that's required to install and fill all Nidagravel honeycomb sheets. The tools required to lay and fill the honeycomb sheets are as follows:
No pegging down or other fixings are required when installing any of the Nidagravel gravel stabilisation range. Once the honeycomb cells are filled with the decorative gravel of your choice, the weight of the gravel is more than sufficient to hold the sheet in place, even on slopes of up to 15%.
No. Nidagravel honeycomb sheets are not designed to be filled with soil. You can only fill Nidagravel sheets with decorative gravels up to approx. 10mm in size. There are a range of Nidagravel Aggregates available to buy online from Nidagravel UK that are perfectly suited to filling Nidagravel 129, 130 and 140 sheets. A different product called Nidagrass is used for soil stabilisation, which is also available to buy online from Nidagravel UK. For more information on Nidagrass please look at the relevant product pages on website.
Yes you can. Nidagravel sheet can be laid directly against house brickwork without causing any problems at all to the house brickwork or foundations. Nidagravel is 100% permeable and allows water to pass directly through the honeycomb sheets and percolate away through the sub-base and sub-grade. It is important to note that any finished surfaces against a house should not breach the DPC (Damp Proof Course) and building regulations currently recommend that finished external surfaces be 150mm below the DPC, which is approximately 2 courses of metric brickwork.
Yes you can. In fact you could probably park several. When the Nidagravel honeycomb cells are filled with gravel they are ready to take full loading. The compressive strengths for Nidagravel 130 and 140 are as follows:
These tests have been undertaken by Nidaplast using the ISO844 test method.
